State land being cleared off grabbers for sport facilities: Shahbaz Sharif

LAHORE : Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif has said that state land is being retrieved from the landgrabbers to be utilised for providing modern sports facilities to the youth.

He was presiding over a meeting regarding promotion of sports and the projects of Punjab Horticulture Authority in camp office at Minar-e-Pakistan on Sunday.

The CM said that sports played an important role in establishing a healthy society; therefore, Punjab government was implementing a comprehensive programme for promotion of healthy activities in the province. He said a network of playgrounds of hockey, cricket, football, volleyball and other games was being laid in the province while special attention was being paid to the promotion of sports activities in South Punjab.

Shahbaz said measures, taken by the government for promotion of sports and horticulture, had given a new look to Punjab. He said more sites be identified for developing playgrounds and maximum number of playgrounds and parks be set up for women.Shabhaz said the government was extending the maximum opportunities to the youth to participate in constructive activities and billions of rupees were being spent on the projects of promotion of healthy activities. He said provision of recreational facilities to the masses in the present age of stress and strain was vital and parks were being beautified while horticulture was being promoted on development projects.

The CM directed the authorities to make proper arrangements for maintenance and upkeep of the playgrounds while a vigorous campaign should be launched for promoting public awareness regarding availability of sports facilities so that maximum people could benefit from them.

He said women comprised a major part of population and they had won laurels for the country in sports and other sectors. He said opportunities were also being offered to women for healthy activities and separate playgrounds and parks were being developed for them as well. He further said illegal occupants of state land be identified in the province and such land be retrieved from them for providing sports facilities to the youth.

Deputy Speaker Punjab Assembly Rana Mashhood Ahmed Khan informed the meeting that a youth helpline would soon be set up with the collaboration of the NGOs for providing counseling to the youth through experts in various sectors. He said that a website has also been launched regarding playgrounds in the province where all details about these grounds had beenprovided. He said that a state-of-the-art gymnasium is being constructed at Rajanpur where facilities pertaining to 17 different sports would be available.

Special Assistant Zaeem Hussain Qadri, Assembly Members, Mian Marghoob Ahmed, Hafiz Mian Nauman, Ch. Shahbaz, Mian Mohsin Latif, Secretaries of Sports and Local Government departments, Commissioner and District Coordination Officer Lahore besides Directors General LDA and PHA were present.
