The proposed system would be launched under Karachi Transportation Improvement Project. The detail of the proposed system was divulged by the KMC Administrator, Muhammad Hussain Syed, to representatives of Japanese government during his ongoing visit of Bangkok for touring the offices of Japan External Trade Organisation. In the first phase, the BRTS will be introduced on two vehicular corridors which will include the 21 kilometres long green-line corridor from Surjani Town to Jama Cloth Market via Nazimabad, Business Recorder Road and Guru Mandir.

The second corridor is 24.4 km-long red line corridor from Model Colony to Regal Chowk via Safoora Goth, University Road and Mazar-e-Quaid.

The construction of an elevated corridor from Lines Area Car Parking Plaza to Regal Chowk is also under consideration.

The KMC administrator informed the Japanese representatives that cities like Beijing, Seoul, Istanbul, Bangkok, New Delhi, Jakarta and Bogota had been using this system successfully. Karachi’s population would reach 27.6 million in 2020 and 31.6 million in 2035, due to which the city was likely to have traffic related issues in the future, said the administrator.

He said that the roads in Karachi were being widened for implementing this proposed public bus system and the menace of illegal parking on major thoroughfares would be addressed too.
