12 sewer lines to be shut: Depts told to ‘save city canal from polluters

LAHORE, Nov 3: All government departments and agencies have been asked to take steps for prevention of city canal’s pollution, and close at least 12 sewer lines connected to the water channel from The Mall up to Jallo.

The direction was given by Additional Chief Secretary Nadeem Hasan Asif while presiding over a special committee constituted by the chief secretary for supervising implementation of a Supreme Court decision regarding the widening of the both tracks of the Canal Road.Officials told Dawn requesting anonymity on Thursday, the departments and agencies were asked to strictly enforce laws against polluting the city canal, sparing no-one found indulging in such practices. Around 12 sewer lines, mostly of private housing societies situated between the Upper Mall and Jallo Mor, were connected to the canal and polluting its water.

Therefore, the authorities concerned were asked to close these lines and make alternate arrangements to dispose of sewage.

Sources said the committee decided that the Parks and Horticulture law would be amended, providing for the creation of a heritage park on the greenbelts along the canal, as per the court direction.

The committee was informed that a plan to correct alignment of the Ferozepur Road and Jail Road underpasses on the Canal Road was almost complete. The space for weaving at these two points was narrow and posed a threat to motorists. Therefore, it needed correction to facilitate an accident-free travel on the road, officials said.

The both tracks of Canal Road are being widened from Thoker Niaz Beg to The Mall.
